Conversation with Basu[1]

(Early January 1941)

The Chinese Communist Party still persists in regarding the Japanese aggressors as the main enemy to strike. If the Kuomintang attempts to undermine this major political orientation of the whole nation, it will inevitably meet with counterblows, and its plans will inevitably fail, but the Chinese Communist Party will never encourage civil war.

[1] In early January 1941, Mao Zedong met with Basu of the Indian Medical Mission to China. Mao Zedong used charcoal to draw on the ground the positions of the Japanese forces, the Kuomintang forces, and the New Fourth Army, explaining the grave situation created by Chiang Kai-shek in engineering the Southern Anhui Incident. This is part of their conversation.
