January 25, 1941. Our opponents have already declared that we have betrayed them. We must no longer adopt a hesitant stance; we can no longer tolerate their actions; and we must not fear a complete rupture. Otherwise, I shall be committing a grave error. Therefore, the entirety of the Yan’an directives and speeches, including their written text, are entirely correct. After we have made our position clear, we will leave it to Chiang Kai-shek to decide how to proceed: either he will implement our Eleven Points, leading to a renewed compromise between the two parties, or he will bring about a total break. You should inform all relevant parties that Chiang Kai-shek has forced us into a position of open opposition. Unless he rescinds his No. 17 Order and takes other necessary steps, we will have no choice but to stand in opposition to him, for there is no other course open to us. You are to return to Yan’an without delay. Further details are set forth in the Secretariat’s instructions. O().
