新華書店

The store name inscribed by Mao Zedong for Xinhua Bookstore.

[1] On September 1, 1939, the sales department of Xinhua Bookstore officially opened for business in a single-storey building at the foot of Fenghuang Mountain in Yan’an. Comrades Zhang Wentian, Zhu De, and other central leading comrades, leaders of the Central Propaganda Department and the border region government, as well as military units and representatives from various circles, went to offer their congratulations. Upon learning the news that Xinhua Bookstore had opened at a new location, Mao Zedong wielded his brush and inscribed the four large characters “Xinhua Bookstore,” and sent his secretary to deliver it to Xinhua Bookstore.
