Speech at the Mobilization Conference for In-Service Cadre Education in Yan’an
(May 20, 1939)
Comrades:
This meeting has been long in preparation; it was originally scheduled much earlier. However, due to the production campaign, its convening was delayed until today. Now, comrades from various organs have responded to the Central Committee’s call for a study movement by forming study groups. Some have already begun their studies and have achieved considerable results, which is most gratifying. Today, we are holding this meeting to discuss several matters pertaining to the study movement.
I. The Necessity of the Study Movement
Drawing on our past experiences and taking into account the current situation, our Party has recently launched two campaigns: one is the production campaign, and the other is the study movement. Both of these campaigns possess broad applicability and enduring significance.
As you all know, the purpose of the production campaign is to secure food and clothing. We have an absolute need for food and clothing; therefore, the current production campaign is of paramount importance. Since everyone throughout the country requires food and clothing, this campaign holds national significance. Extending this logic further, it applies not only to China but also to the entire world. Thus, the production campaign possesses universal relevance. Moreover, it is not just we who need food and clothing; our sons, grandsons, and future generations will continue to require them as well. Consequently, the production campaign is essential not only in the past and present but also in the future. This constitutes the basis for its permanent nature.
