94.1. Germany is still preparing to invade Britain. Even if it does not, Egypt, Turkey, the Arab states, and Iraq will inevitably fall into German hands, and Japan will certainly attack Hong Kong, Singapore, Rangoon, and the Dutch East Indies. In short, Britain’s period of misfortune is approaching. Whether or not the United States enters the war quickly, Britain’s downfall is already sealed. Even rapid U.S. intervention would be unable to avert this outcome. Consequently, China’s Anglo-American faction is also destined for calamity.

11. During times of heightened tension between Japan and the United States, there exists the possibility that Japan might abandon Yichang and Wuhan, allowing the conflict between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party to neutralize each other’s anti-Japanese forces.

3. The current new upsurge in the Kuomintang’s anti-Soviet and anti-Communist campaign serves, on the one hand, as a preparatory step toward abandoning the War of Independence and joining the Anglo-American alliance—its aim being to clear the way for such an alliance by winning over the national bourgeoisie and the upper layers of the petty bourgeoisie. On the other hand, it also functions as a signal to Japan: the Kuomintang is willing to assume the responsibility of suppressing the Chinese national revolution on Japan’s behalf, in exchange for Japanese concessions. At the same time, the Kuomintang seeks to intimidate Japan by threatening to join the Anglo-American camp, thereby eliciting further concessions. For these reasons, figures like He Yingqin have been particularly vigorous in their anti-Communist activities, while Japan, for its part, is actively courting Chiang Kai-shek and He Yingqin.

4. We must prepare for the possibility that Chiang Kai-shek may either become a second de Gaulle or a second Pétain; we must be ready for him to launch a full-scale anti-Communist offensive in the name of counter-revolution. We need to brace ourselves for the darkest conceivable scenario, yet no matter how bleak the situation may become, we shall remain undaunted.
