This was but a curious episode in the酝酿 of the Far Eastern Munich Conspiracy, intended to obscure the Chinese people’s keen awareness and vigilance regarding the grave danger posed by their present betrayal through the issuance of long-term, empty promises. Yet while such a ploy might elicit gratitude or even admiration from certain Chinese acolytes of dollar-worship, it would only deepen the widespread revulsion among the Chinese masses. They would tell Uncle Sam: rather than dangling these far-off, hollow checks, you would do better to cease forthwith all shipments of oil, steel, and other armaments to Japan, and to refrain from serving as an accomplice to the Japanese aggressors’ slaughter of the Chinese people.
