Inscription for the Masthead of the Magazine *Mountain Range Literature* in Yan’an[1]

(October 27, 1938)

Mountain Range Literature

I have written a few characters—I wonder if they are usable?

As for the name, it seems “Hilltop Literature” would be better.

Mao Zedong

October 27

[1] The mass organization “Mountain Range Literature Society,” established in late October 1938, put forward “Ten Methods of Literary and Artistic Activity” and prepared to publish an irregular periodical, *Mountain Range Literature*, primarily featuring poetry and prose exercises by young literary and art enthusiasts. Xi Dinghuai wrote a letter to Mao Zedong, reporting on plans to further develop mass anti-Japanese war literary and artistic activities and requesting that he inscribe the masthead for *Mountain Range Literature*. Mao Zedong inscribed the masthead for it. Later, because printing conditions could not be secured, *Mountain Range Literature* was not published; instead, a mimeographed edition, *Mountain Range Poetry*, was produced. Thus, the “Mountain Range Poetry Society” emerged. The activities of the Mountain Range Literature Society, however, continued until September 1940.
