Speech at the Kangda Summary Meeting Commemorating “July 1,” “July 7,” and the Shock Troops Movement[1]

(July 9, 1938)

The shock troopers are heroes with names, but there are also many nameless heroes. Heroes with names emerge from among the nameless heroes, and the two cannot be separated. The relationship between the army and the people, between officers and soldiers, and between leaders and the masses is also like this.

[1] In June 1938, students at Kangda launched a revolutionary emulation campaign across the school to greet the first anniversary of the “July 7” War of Resistance by creating shock troopers of the resistance. Slogans such as “Shock assault on study, shock assault on work, shock assault on life” were put forward. The movement lasted one month, producing 520 shock troopers and a number of model units. This is part of Mao Zedong’s speech at the Kangda summary meeting commemorating “July 1,” “July 7,” and the Shock Troops Movement.
