[1] Refers to the letter Liu Xuewei sent to Mao Zedong and the forwarded magazine *July*. Liu Xuewei (1912–1998), also known as Sun Xuewei, a native of Langdai, Guizhou (now part of Liupanshui City), was a literary critic. At the time, he was engaged in literary and artistic work in Yan'an. In his letter to Mao Zedong, he stated: "Comrade Hu Feng, editor-in-chief of the semimonthly *July* in Hankou, sent the first issue of the third volume of *July* and instructed that a copy be given to you. I am now forwarding it for your inspection and receipt."

[2] Refers to the symposium record titled "Propaganda, Literature, and the Utilization of Old Forms" published in that issue of the semimonthly *July*. Participants in this symposium included Hu Feng, Nie Gannu, Wu Zuxiang, Ouyang Fanhai, Kaji Wataru, Ai Qing, Wu Xiru, and Ikeda Sachiko.
