Today's meeting also aims to demonstrate an attitude to the people across the nation: for the sake of resisting Japan, the unity and progress of the entire nation are essential. Some people emphasize resistance against Japan alone but are unwilling to stress unity and progress, or even fail to mention them at all. This is incorrect. Without genuine, solid unity and without swift, tangible progress, how can we persist in resisting Japan? The Kuomintang's anti-communist diehards emphasize unification, but their so-called "unification" is false unification, not true unification; it is unreasonable unification, not reasonable unification; it is formalistic unification, not substantive unification. They loudly proclaim unification, yet their aim is to abolish the Communist Party, the Eighth Route Army, the New Fourth Army, and the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, claiming that as long as the Communist Party, the Eighth Route Army, the New Fourth Army, and the Border Region exist, China is not unified. They want to turn everything into the Kuomintang, not only continuing their one-party dictatorship but also expanding it. If that is the case, what unification is there? Frankly speaking, in the past, without the Communist Party, the Eighth Route Army, the New Fourth Army, and the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region...

(Illegible text) ...had they not advocated ceasing the civil war and uniting to resist Japan, no one would have initiated the Anti-Japanese National United Front, no one would have led the peaceful resolution of the Xi'an Incident, and resistance against Japan could not have been carried out. Today, without the Communist Party, the Eighth Route Army, the New Fourth Army, the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, and all anti-Japanese democratic base areas sincerely stepping forward to uphold the overall situation of resistance against Japan and oppose the dangerous tendencies of capitulation, division, and retrogression, everything would descend into chaos. The several hundred thousand troops of the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army are holding back two-fifths of the enemy and engaging seventeen of the forty Japanese divisions. Why should they be abolished? Here, first, there are no corrupt officials; second, no local tyrants and evil gentry; third, no gambling; fourth, no prostitution; fifth, no concubines; sixth, no beggars; seventh, no cliques pursuing private interests; eighth, no lethargic or dispirited atmosphere; ninth, no one profiting from friction; tenth, no one making fortunes from national calamity. Why should it be abolished? Only shameless people can utter such shameless words. What right do the diehards have to grunt before us? Comrades, of course, this cannot be allowed. It is not about abolishing the Border Region, but about the whole nation learning from the Border Region; not about abolishing the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army, but about the whole nation learning from the Eighth Route Army and the New Fourth Army; not about abolishing the Communist Party, but about the whole nation learning from the Communist Party; not about progressive people aligning with the backward, but about the backward aligning with the progressive. We Communists are the strongest advocates of unification. We initiated the united front and proposed the slogan of a unified democratic republic. Who else could propose these? Who else could implement them? Who else would accept a monthly salary of just five yuan? Who else could create such incorruptible governance? Unification, unification—the capitulationists have their own theory of unification, demanding that we unify under capitulation; the anti-communist diehards have their own theory of unification, demanding that we unify under division and retrogression. Can we believe such reasoning? Can unification not based on the three pillars of resistance, unity, and progress be considered true unification? Can it be considered reasonable unification? Can it be considered substantive unification? It is sheer fantasy! Today, we hold this assembly precisely to put forward our theory of unification. Our theory of unification is the theory of unification for the entire nation, the theory of unification for all people of conscience. This theory of unification is founded on the three pillars of resistance, unity, and progress. Only through progress can there be unity, only through unity can there be resistance against Japan, and only through progress, unity, and resistance against Japan can there be unification. This is our theory of unification, this is the true theory of unification, this is the reasonable theory of unification, this is the substantive theory of unification. That false theory of unification, that unreasonable theory of unification, that formalistic theory of unification is a theory of unification that leads to national subjugation, a theory of unification that betrays all conscience. They seek to eliminate the Communist Party, the Eighth Route Army, the New Fourth Army, and the democratic anti-Japanese base areas, to wipe out all local anti-Japanese forces, so as to unify everything under the Kuomintang. This is a conspiracy, using the name of unification to practice dictatorship, hanging the sheep's head of unification to sell the dog meat of their one-party dictatorship, brazenly and shamelessly blustering, oblivious to any sense of shame in human affairs. Today, we hold this assembly precisely to puncture their paper tiger, and we must resolutely oppose the anti-communist diehards.
