With regard to the great cause of the united front between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party for national salvation, the necessary foundation has already been laid by the Communist Party’s declaration, released through the Central News Agency on September 22, and by Chiang Kai-shek’s address, also published by the same agency on September 23. Chiang’s address elucidated the profound significance of national unity in the face of foreign aggression; it pledged a complete new start with all the people of the country, and it recognized the Communist Party’s legal status throughout China—actions that are indeed commendable. Nevertheless, his remarks still failed to discard the Kuomintang’s spirit of self-importance and did not frankly acknowledge the responsibility the party had borne over the past decade during the nation’s crisis, which is regrettable.

Both the Communist Party’s declaration and Chiang’s address heralded the success of the Chinese Anti-Japanese National United Front. The task ahead is to implement democratic politics, improve the people’s livelihood, and energize the nationwide anti-Japanese movement, thereby greatly strengthening the forces engaged in the War of Resistance. This declaration, announcing the cooperation between the two parties, should have been issued much earlier. It was drafted as early as July 4 and handed over to the Kuomintang on July 15; yet its publication was delayed for more than two months. Despite this delay, the fundamental spirit of the declaration remains intact. It will serve not only as the guiding principle for unity between the two parties but also as the basic principle for the great unity of the entire nation. The rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the overthrow of Japanese imperialism will both find their foundation in the future unity of the two parties and in the nationwide solidarity of the Chinese people.
