Comrades Enlai and others have returned to Yan’an and reported on your great virtues, inspiring in us boundless admiration. Under your leadership, the entire nation is engaged in an unprecedentedly great revolutionary war, a cause revered by every Chinese person. Over the past fifteen months of the War of Resistance, we have grown stronger with each setback, pressing forward with undaunted resolve. Although the belligerent enemy has yet to be subdued, the foundations of ultimate victory have already been laid, and the future holds bright prospects and boundless hope. The situation in the war is gradually entering a new phase: on the one hand, it will become more difficult; on the other, it will surely advance further. It is imperative to unite all the people, consolidate and expand the united front against Japan, persist in protracted warfare, mobilize fresh forces, overcome difficulties, and prepare for a counteroffensive. In this process, the enemy will undoubtedly exploit the European developments and our country’s vulnerabilities to instigate various subversive plots aimed at undermining national unity and solidarity. Therefore, we believe that unity and solidarity during this period are more critical than ever. Only by the concerted and best efforts of all parties, groupings, and the entire people, under your unified leadership, can we firmly guard against and defeat the enemy’s destructive schemes, dispel pessimistic sentiments among our fellow countrymen, raise national consciousness and confidence in victory, and implement the necessary wartime policies for the new stage—only then can we halt the enemy’s offensive, prepare for a counteroffensive, and achieve our objectives.

Given the tense situation in Wuhan, we request that Comrade Enlai return to Wuhan without waiting for the conclusion of the meeting, so that he may pay his respects to you and discuss all matters. Any points left unsaid will be conveyed orally by Enlai.

I, Ze Dong, am firmly convinced that the long-term unity of the Kuomintang and the Communist Party will sustain the protracted war. No matter how ferocious and obstinate the enemy may be, it will ultimately be defeated. The Chinese nation, comprising four hundred and fifty million people, will ultimately surmount its arduous trials through sustained struggle, build up its strength, launch a counteroffensive, drive out the aggressors, and establish itself as a powerful force in East Asia. I am certain that you share this conviction and aspiration.

With these sentiments, I respectfully wish you good health and offer my homage to the national revolution. Mao Zedong, humbly submitted on September 19, 1928.
