Telegram to Zhou Enlai and Bo Gu[1]

(December 31, 1936)

The Central Committee will move to Yan’an within ten days. The two cities, Ganquan to the south and Wayaobu to the north, must be handed over to us; otherwise, it would be extremely inconvenient. Please negotiate with Yang to hand over Ganquan, and also request Yang to telegraph Gao Guizi to hand over Wayaobu. The Shaanxi Red Army may refrain from attacking Qingjian and Suide[2], and the field army may refrain from occupying Xunyi, Chunhua, and Yaozhou as conditions for the exchange.[3]

[1] This is the main content of Mao Zedong’s telegram to Zhou Enlai and Bo Gu (Qin Bangxian) regarding the request for Zhou Enlai and others to negotiate with Yang Hucheng on the issue of the Red Army’s stationing after the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China moves to Yan’an.

[2] Qing and Sui refer to Qingjian and Suide.

[3] On December 30, Zhou Enlai negotiated with Yang Hucheng on the issue of the Red Army’s stationing. Yang proposed that the Red Army should not enter Xunyi, Chunhua, and Yaozhou (Yao County), which are too close to the Xi’an-Lanzhou Highway.
