Agreement Concluded with the Church[1]

(December 28, 1936)

(A) The Church recognizes the Soviet Red Army’s propositions of resisting Japan and saving the nation and opposing warlords and traitors to the nation; the Soviet Red Army recognizes the existence of the Church.
(B) All troops, militia, and detectives of the Kuomintang warlords shall be denied entry into the Church area; all Church members shall be citizens of the Soviet and obey Soviet laws; the Soviet Red Army recognizes freedom of preaching and freedom of religious belief.
(C) The property of the Church shall not be confiscated; the Church shall voluntarily contribute funds for resisting Japan and saving the nation.
(D) Economic trade shall not be obstructed.
(E) Other matters shall be handled through consultation at any time.

[1] In order to secure the establishment of peaceful and friendly relations between the Church and the Soviet Red Army, Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai jointly proposed concluding an agreement with various churches. This is the main content proposed by Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai.
