To Zhang Xueliang on Halting the Civil War Launched by Nanjing Through Donald’s Activities
(December 15, 1936)

Brother Li Yi:
(1) French public opinion is quite favorable, and the British is not bad either.
(2) I have heard that your former adviser, the Briton Donald, has expressed his intention to come to Shaanxi. It would be advisable to use Donald’s mediation to halt the civil war currently being launched by Nanjing and to win British sympathy. When Donald returns to Nanjing, send someone to accompany him to make contact with He Yingqin, Kong Xiangxi, and Chen Lifu.
(3) Our side today issued a formal public telegram: “Firmly advocate halting the civil war.” Another telegram has been sent to Chen Lifu.
(4) Regarding the telegram sent yesterday on organizing an anti-Japanese allied army, for the time being please do not make it public externally, but it seems advisable to announce it internally in order to unify the morale of the troops.
On all the above points, please decide at your discretion.
