Letter to Li Jishen[1]

(September 23, 1936)

With the national crisis being what it is, unless there are a number of pure and selfless political groups and many benevolent and determined individuals who endure arduous struggles to serve as the backbone for all parties, factions, circles, and armies across the nation, the true completion of the great anti-Japanese united front and the persistent waging of the struggle cannot be easily achieved.

[1] On September 23, 1936, Mao Zedong wrote to Li Jishen, expressing the hope that Li Jishen, together with Li Zongren and Bai Chongxi, would send a person in political charge to Shaanxi, so that a dedicated representative could be stationed there permanently to facilitate communication and mutual understanding. This is the main content of the letter.
