Letter to Mao Bingwen[1]

(September 8, 1936)

The Red Army is marching north to resist Japan; beyond this, it seeks nothing. You, sir, must absolutely not resist with hostile intent. I have already telegraphed the troops in southern and northern Gansu that, provided your esteemed army does not go to extremes, they shall not cause you difficulties. If you, sir, approve of the proposal for united resistance against Japan, you may at any time send representatives to consult with the Red Army commanders at the front.
