Model Xingguo

An inscription by Mao Zedong for the delegates from Xingguo to the Second National Soviet Congress.

[1] In January 1934, Comrade Mao Zedong praised at the Second National Soviet Congress: "The comrades in Xingguo have created first-rate work, and they deserve our commendation as model workers." He also issued a call "to create several thousand Changgang Townships and several dozen Xingguo Counties." It was at this congress that Mao Zedong gladly wrote the four large characters "Model Xingguo" as an inscription for the delegates from Xingguo, Jiangxi. When the delegates brought back Mao Zedong's inscription at that time, in order to inspire the people of the entire county to strive to create a permanent model county, they specially had the inscription made into four red-lacquered plaques, hung high above the four city-gate entrances to Xingguo city from the east, south, west, and north. "Model Xingguo" has been renowned far and wide ever since and is celebrated to this day.
