Ninghua, Qingliu, and Guihua—
narrow paths through dense forests, slick with moss.
Where do we head today?
Straight toward the foot of the Wuyi Mountains.
At the foot of the mountains, at the foot of the mountains,
the red flag waves in the wind, a picture come to life.

[Commentary]
In December 1929, the Fourth Red Army held its Ninth Party Congress in Gutian Town, Shanghang County. During this time, Chiang Kai-shek launched the “Three-Province Encirclement Campaign.” To smash the encirclement, the Fourth Red Army decided to cross the Wuyi Mountains westward into Jiangxi to wage guerrilla warfare. The march coincided with the New Year, and this poem was composed on New Year’s Day.

[Notes]
Ninghua, Qingliu, and Guihua: all are county names in Fujian Province.
