I. The Course of the Red Army's Operations

1. Entering Central Fujian and Holding Fast at Shanghang and Yongding
When Longyan was captured for the third time on June 19, 1919, and Chen Guohui was mopped up, there were no major enemies around western Fujian. It was then decided that the First Column would proceed from Kanshi, Hexi, Zhengjiadu, Lufeng, and Anxiang, moving straight up the east bank of the Gan River opposite Shanghang, working all the way to Huilong and Guanzhuang. The Second, Third, and Fourth Columns worked separately in various areas of western Fujian, while the headquarters led the directly subordinate units first to Xinquan. The Front Committee dispatched five members (Mao Zedong and others) to Jiaoyang to assist the Western Fujian Special Committee in convening the First Congress of Western Fujian, with the overall objective of creating a red zone in western Fujian. In mid-July 1919, the clamor for a joint suppression campaign gradually intensified, with troops from three provinces on the move. Shanghang remained firmly held by Lu Xinming, Zhang Zhen entered Hexi from Nanjing, and the brigades of Chen Weiyuan and Zhang Shide concentrated at Dabu, Songkou, and Meixian respectively. Although Li Wenbin's brigade in Tingzhou had not yet moved, Jin Handing's troops gradually advanced from the Ruijin area, and tensions mounted on all fronts. On July 30, it was reported that Tingzhou had been reinforced by two regiments, Li Wenbin had advanced into Hetian, and Longyan reported that Zhang Zhen's troops had entered Shizhong, making the joint suppression campaign even more pressing. At that time, some in the Fourth Army advocated concentrating forces to fight in western Fujian, while others proposed striking outward. Ultimately, the Front Committee concluded that there was little to be gained in western Fujian, and on the 99th, it was decided to strike outward. Consequently, the First and Third Columns, together with the army headquarters and the Front Committee, rushed overnight to Longyan and Baisha to concentrate. The First Column proceeded via Liancheng in one stage; the First Column, being in the Huilong area and unable to catch up, was thus ordered to remain in western Fujian and, together with the Fourth Column, defend western Fujian while seeking opportunities to strike outward. After separating, the First Column, unable to cross the Gan River or proceed to East River, returned to the Western Fujian Special Committee. The Fourth Column jointly decided to disperse forces in Yongding and Longyan, actively arranging work, organizing armed masses, and confronting the enemy while surrounded by the masses. The First Column moved into Dayangba at the junction of Longyan, Shanghang, and Yongding, dividing the entire column into three parts to mobilize the masses, establish Soviet governments, and carry out thorough land redistribution. In this way, the masses were all mobilized. Consequently, when the enemy Chen Weiyuan arrived with three regiments and occupied Hulei in Yongding, he was harassed daily and everywhere. Because he acted blindly and lacked mass support, even a single platoon of ours could engage one of his regiments. He remained in Yongding for over a month, his three regiments not daring to search the mountains, and still suffered many casualties. The Fourth Column expanded from the northern district of Shanghang to Xinquan (south of Liancheng) and Lengfang (south of Tingzhou). Jin Handing remained only in Tingzhou and Liancheng throughout. Zhang Zhen and Lian Fengnian's brigade took about a month to enter Longyan from Shizhong. The Second and Third Columns, after concentrating at Baisha, rushed overnight to Ningyang, then fought back to Zhangping, and subsequently turned toward Datian and Dehua in central Fujian. At this time, there were many sick personnel, some lost contact along the way, heavy cannons that could not be carried were abandoned, and rifles too heavy to bear had to be given to bandits, asking them to help settle our wounded. The losses totaled over 300 men and more than 100 rifles. It was decided to return to western Fujian, so they turned back to Zhangping, attacked Zhang Zhen's Zhang Rukuang brigade, rushed overnight into Yongfu, frightened off Yang Fengnian's brigade in Longyan, and returned to Longyan. This joint suppression campaign came to an end for the time being.

2. The Joining of Forces at Shanghang
Before dawn on September 1, 1919, the Second and Third Columns, together with the masses of Shanghang and a part of the First Column? □-. Lu Xinming fled alone. Shanghang was captured, the work in the Gan River basin was completed, and the Soviet area expanded to Wuping. The Fourth Column was all engaged in rest and reorganization and in replenishing with prisoners. Each column was expanded to three detachments, with each column numbering 1,800 to 1,900 men, and the entire army totaling over 7,000. At this time, although Chen Weiyuan withdrew into East River, Liu Heding
