Comrades! Oppressed people: Since imperialism has colluded with the domestic warlords, corrupt officials, venal mandarins, local tyrants, and reactionary gentry—our impoverished farmers and workers, who toil from dawn till dusk yet can scarcely find enough to eat or warm clothes to wear—are literally trapped in an abyss of suffering, with no freedom to live or die as we choose. Alas! Are we, the oppressed peasantry and working class, destined by birth to be crushed and exploited by a privileged clique of warlords, corrupt bureaucrats, local despots, and capitalists? Are we meant to remain their permanent slaves, mere beasts of burden? If they wish to kill us, let them; if they want to imprison us, so be it. Yet should we dare offer even the slightest resistance, we are branded “treasonous” and “subversive of moral order.” Truly, this is a bestial world! Such virulent, brutal oppression has driven us to the brink of endurance. Hence, in recent times, oppressed farmers and workers across the country have risen in tumultuous protest, organizing peasant associations and trade unions to fight for relief from their misery. In response, the vicious feudal forces—the local tyrants, reactionary gentry, and outlawed landlords—alarmed at the threat to their own vested interests and predatory exploitation, have panicked. They accuse us of “going too far,” “making a fuss,” or label us “hooligans,” “ruffians,” and “bandits,” employing divisive tactics to turn public opinion against us. In their final convulsions, they have intensified their assault upon us poor peasants and workers. As a result, bloody tragedies have unfolded in Yangxin, Mianyang, Tianmen, Hanchuan, as well as in Ganzhou and Jiujiang. The atrocities in Yangxin and Mianyang were perpetrated by the counterrevolutionary feudal forces in the countryside—corrupt officials, local tyrants, reactionary gentry, and large landowners—against the revolutionary forces represented by the peasant associations. They even resorted to burning peasant leaders alive with kerosene, claiming more than six lives in total. What unspeakable horror! Meanwhile, the bloodshed in Ganzhou and Jiujiang was carried out by pseudo-revolutionaries and counterrevolutionaries, who attacked the revolutionary working-class masses, executing several worker leaders. Most tragically, the chief perpetrators of these executions were none other than Chiang Kai-shek’s subordinate, the Party representative of the Provisional First Division, along with Chiang’s own bodyguards. In light of such bloody carnage, Chiang Kai-shek cannot but bear responsibility. Brothers and sisters among the poor, most humiliated, and most oppressed—farmers and workers alike—the counterrevolutionary forces have now united in a ferocious onslaught against us. Their methods are exceedingly treacherous. We stand at a life-or-death juncture. Unless we rally with every ounce of our strength and fight resolutely, there will be no future for us. Let us recognize clearly that we have entered a phase of direct, close-quarters struggle; our situation demands nothing less. We must press forward relentlessly against the dark curtain of feudal domination, for sooner or later we shall surely emerge into the light. Revolutionary comrades from all walks of life: In upholding the Premier’s policy of supporting both peasants and workers, we are obliged to extend aid to those most oppressed and most afflicted, so that they may achieve final liberation and hasten the success of the revolution. We commemorate our martyrs because they laid down their lives in the struggle for the rights of farmers and workers. And we shall continue to carry on their legacy, leading the peasant and worker masses in their offensive against the remnants of feudalism. To our comrades who have suffered and sacrificed alongside us in this common cause: though we survive them, we are but the next in line—standby fighters ready to join hands with the people. It is our sacred duty, our inescapable obligation, to eradicate the local tyrants, reactionary gentry, corrupt officials, and venal mandarins; to avenge the fallen farmer and worker comrades of Yangxin and Ganzhou; to safeguard the interests of peasants and workers; to arm the peasantry and proletariat; to uphold the Premier’s policy for the peasantry and proletariat; for without overthrowing the local tyrants and reactionary gentry, the revolution cannot succeed. To oppose the peasant and worker movements is to align oneself with counterrevolution. Let us launch a great rural revolution! The Yangxin massacre was an attack by the rural counterrevolutionary feudal forces against the revolutionary movement; the Ganzhou tragedy was perpetrated by pseudo-revolutionaries and counterrevolutionaries against the revolutionary working-class forces—raise the banner of the Party! Eradicate the feudal forces! Oppose military dictatorship! Long live the liberation of peasants and workers! Long live the liberation of the oppressed classes! Long live the success of the National Revolution! Long live the success of the World Revolution!
