Notice on the Survey Form of the Reorganization Committee of the Young China Association: (1) The deadline for domestic members to submit the survey form is September 30 of this year; for overseas members, it is October 31 of this year. Those who fail to submit by the deadline will have their membership revoked in accordance with Article 4 of the resolution adopted at the current annual meeting. (2) Please write your answers legibly and express yourself clearly. Otherwise, any misunderstandings arising therefrom shall be the responsibility of the respondent. (3) The survey form consists of two copies: one for printing and one for record-keeping. Both are to be completed according to the prescribed format and mailed via registered post, double registration required, to Mr. Huang Zhongsu, No. 6 Wangjin Street, Nanjing, for onward transmission.

Name: Mao Zedong, alias Runzhi; Province: Hunan; Most recent mailing address: Guangzhou, Central Executive Committee of the Nationalist Party; Permanent mailing address: Cultural Bookstore, Xiangtan County; Questions: Please answer each item individually. (1) What ideology do you hold regarding China, which is currently beset by both internal and external crises? I believe in communism and advocate a proletarian social revolution. However, the present internal and external oppressions cannot be overthrown by a single class alone. Therefore, I support a national revolution based on cooperation among the proletariat, the petty bourgeoisie, and the left wing of the middle class, implementing the Three Principles of the People of the Nationalist Party, in order to defeat imperialism, the warlords, and the comprador and landlord classes (that is, the big bourgeoisie and the right wing of the middle class in China that are closely linked with imperialism and the warlords), thereby establishing a joint dictatorship of the proletariat, the petty bourgeoisie, and the left wing of the middle class—a dictatorship of the revolutionary masses. (2) What is your attitude toward improving the affairs of this association? There are clearly conflicting ideologies among its members, and many members’ minds are not truly aligned with the spirit of the association. Under these circumstances, the Young China Association has no real need to exist, and I propose that it be dissolved. (3) Please briefly describe your experiences since joining the association: (a) Studies: I have studied social sciences, with a particular focus on the problem of Chinese peasants. (b) Career: I taught for one year, engaged in workers’ movements for two years, peasant movements for half a year, and organizational work for the Nationalist Party for one year.

Republic of China, Year 14, November 21st. This document was forwarded from Changsha on the same day and is printed according to the original survey form filled out by Mao Zedong.

Notes [1]: In this text, the sections typeset in imitation Song typeface are those originally contained in the survey form, while the parts set in regular Song typeface were filled in by Mao Zedong. The Young China Association was initiated by Li Dazhao, Wang Guangqi, and others, and was founded in Beijing in July 1919. Mao Zedong joined the association in January 1920. The association published periodicals such as “Young China” and “Young World.” Its membership was diverse, comprising communists, anarchists, and nationalists. In 1925, the association passed a resolution to reorganize itself and distributed survey forms to solicit members’ opinions on the association’s objectives and ways to improve its operations. However, due to lack of consensus, the reorganization could not proceed, and the association subsequently ceased its activities.
