To Comrade Zhang Qiuren[1]

(January 24, 1923)

Comrade Fu, the grand examination in the capital is imminent; if there is good news, I hope you will inform me.[2]

[1] This is part of a letter from Mao Zedong to Zhang Qiuren, who was working at the Third Normal School in Hengyang.

[2] On January 25, 1923, Zhang Qiuren wrote in a letter to Shi Cuntong, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Socialist Youth League: "The atmosphere here has been very foul lately. The teaching staff here say: the garrison commander is coming to inspect this school, because the provincial governor has sent him official business, saying that a certain person at the Third Normal School—referring to me—came from Shanghai..." "The strike at Shuikoushan has indeed had a great impact. A support association has been organized here again, which increasingly draws the attention of society and makes it detest us. On New Year's Day, the name of the CY was made public—leaflets were distributed, and some people made a great fuss about it! Hunan already hangs the signboard of self-government, so regarding movement activities, we should reasonably have more freedom. When I go there, I shall discuss this with Brother Ziren."
