Elegiac Couplet for Huang Ai and Pang Renquan[1]
(1922)
Struggling for the multitude, the eternal sorrow lies in the labor movement;
Sacrificing for righteousness, ready to die, even in the netherworld they smile, though their souls bear unjust wrongs.

[1] Huang Ai, courtesy name Zhengpin, was a native of Changde, Hunan. While studying in Tianjin, he participated in the Awakening Society led by Zhou Enlai and was one of Zhou Enlai’s closest friends. Pang Renquan, a native of Xiangtan, Hunan, had participated in the movement to expel Zhang Jingyao. Both were born in 1897 and were leaders of the Changsha Labor Union, which “extended across all trades and had seven thousand members.” On January 16, 1922, the two were secretly executed by the Hunan authorities. This is the elegiac couplet Mao Zedong wrote for them.
