Letter to Eighth Maternal Uncle and Aunt[1]

Most Respected Uncle and Aunt:

Long without correspondence—a grave negligence! I trust you are both in good health, and that the entire household is safe and well! Your nephew remains in good health in the provincial capital, yet his learning has made no progress, for which he is deeply ashamed! Taking advantage of Mr. Liu’s[2] return home, I entrust him to bring this brief note as a token of my regards. Should the opportunity arise, I earnestly pray that you will both favor me with your guidance and instruction! With respectful wishes for your virtuous peace!
