Letter to Yi Lirong (January 13,1920)
Elder Brother Runsheng:
I received your letter two days ago, and sent you a reply yesterday. I expect it
has reached you. I hear Mr. Zhang Shen’an3 of Changsha is coming to Beijing. When
he passes through Wuhan, please hand him a letter from me. There is little to do
in Beijing. It is better that Zhang not come to Beijing, but go straight to Shanghai.
Please give him this message.
Your younger brother Zedong
3 Chen Shufan, zi Bosheng, was military governor of his native province, Shaanxi, from 1915 to
1921. As governor he kept most of the revenue from the heavy opium tax he imposed in the province,
thus amassing a large personal fortune.
