It Was He (September 26,1919)
The rickshaw boy had been pulling his carriage all day long, pulling until he was
dizzy, running around aimlessly, oblivious of what was going on. Suddenly, some heavy
blows landed on his back. “Ai-yo,” he cried out, “this is terrible!”145 Tears ran down his
cheeks. At first, he was ready to take up the quarrel, but after one glance, he saw that
it was he!146 Then he dared not utter a word, but fled as fast as he could, pulling his
rickshaw.
