*Zhang Jian said, “The government is like one’s father and elder brothers; students are like one’s younger siblings. If the country is fortunate, it will prosper so long as the parents and elders set a proper example and the young people, though they may voice mild criticism or complaint, remain loyal and do not stir up disorder. Should misfortune strike and the elders act excessively, it is still the duty of the younger generation to seek redress—with a spirit of quiet censure rather than rebellion—so that the nation may find stability. Otherwise, it will be in peril.” Think about it: what kind of reasoning is this? Lieutenant General Horinouchi of Japan declared, “At this juncture, decisive measures must be taken without delay: the Beiyang government ought to punish those responsible for these outrages and at the same time demonstrate the awesome power of Japan. Moreover, troops should be dispatched to Beijing and Tianjin, warships sent down the Yangtze River, and all anti-Japanese riots absolutely prevented.” Reflect on it: what does this mean? Zhang Zuolin remarked, “Now that the Peace Conference has opened, the Great Marshal, moved by sincere compassion, has put forward a noble proposal from above. The enlightened men throughout the realm, inspired by his loyal, loving, and earnest intent, have rallied below like dragons and tigers, presenting an opportunity that comes but once in a thousand years.” What servile language! Ponder this: what is he trying to say? Wang Zhanyuan proclaimed, “Hubei belongs to Wang Zhanyuan alone.” Consider: what sort of statement is this?
