In the Kherson investigation of 124 peasant households, it is particularly important to note the data 1) on consumption in various groups of the peasant population and 2) on livestock feed. The latter data, although incomplete, are extremely valuable in view of the fact that such data are exceedingly rare in both Russian and foreign literature.

3) If one draws up a balance from the aggregate sums of revenues and expenditures presented in the book, one obtains a decline in income per desyatina from small to large households. (Cf. Klawki). An interesting example of the inadequacy of data on income and expenditure without taking consumption into account.

4) A major shortcoming of the data is their incompleteness and fragmentation. The type of investigation is budgetary, but the budget is not carried through to completion. There are no data on the use of all grain or on its purchase (NB)—the excuse given for this latter point (p. 54, at the beginning of § V) is utterly absurd.

The figures thus do not add up. The sum of agricultural and personal expenditures far exceeds the sum of agricultural and other incomes in groups VI, V, IV, III, II and I, that is, in all groups. (Perhaps because grain consumption was included in personal expenditures but grain was not included in incomes? This should, of course, have had some effect, but this does not explain the matter).

The separation of the natural portion of the budget from the monetary portion has likewise not been conducted with sufficient consistency—indeed, it has not been conducted at all.
