about the long years of bureaucratic oppression, violence, tyranny,
ruin and [impoverishment] the lack of rights of the people, about the impossibility of
preserving such a state of affairs. "These conditions inevitably
bring about the coming storm, and the first peals of thunder are already heard.
This storm carries with it the danger of a bloody civil war
and the overthrow of the throne. Sovereign, save the fatherland from these
calamities while there is still time." "Hear the voice of the Russian
people through freely elected representatives and call them to participate in legislation... Do not trust negligent and flattering [(negligent & w il\)] servants, trust

CORRECTIONS AND DELETIONS IN THE ARTICLE "TREPOV.
IS IN CHARGE" \
[The English correspondent, apparently well informed, reports some interesting details about Trepov's wild reprisals. (D[ai 1 y]. Telegraph 80 I).] ON FRIDAY
evening, four employees of the newspaper Nasha Zhizn were taken,
Prokopovich with his wife, Khizhnyakov and Yakovlev (Bogucharsky).
[The latter returned home at 11/* at night and found the police waiting for him since 8 p.m.
evening. His wife was locked by the police in the study until her husband arrived.]
From [writers] employees of the newspaper Nashi Dni [Ganfman (Kaufman?) was taken, and] Ganeyzer was taken on Saturday morning. The police are especially diligently searching for money, sent
from abroad to the strikers or to help the widows and orphans of those killed. They arrest in masses: the number of the paper about Bogucharsky's arrest
was 53, and Khizhnyakov's was 109. On Saturday, in the editorial offices of both mentioned newspapers, searches were conducted and all
without exception the manuscripts were taken, including detailed reports about the events
for the whole week, reports compiled and signed by reliable witnesses - eyewitnesses, who recorded everything
that they saw, for the edification of future generations. All this material
will never see the light of day now. [(Something could be renewed for the free press, we note for ourselves. Ped.)**]
Further a letter is given, which reports details about the Vladimir gubernia zemstvo assembly that took place. Ed.

CORRECTIONS AND DELETIONS

On Wednesday, the number of those arrested was so great that
they had to put two or three in one cell.
The new dictator is quite unceremonious with the workers.
Since Thursday they have begun to seize them in groups and send them back home.
There they will, of course, spread [new political ideas]
news about the events of January 9 and preach [discontent and
struggle, - the Englishman notes] the struggle with autocracy.
Trepov [intensively] takes up his old Moscow policy: to lure the mass of workers with economic handouts.
Entrepreneurs gather together with the Minister of Finance and consider various concessions to workers, they talk about a 9-
hour working day. The Minister of Finance receives on Tuesday
a delegation of workers, promises economic reforms, warns
against political agitation, [the government is clearly trying to
divide the working masses, to bribe whoever can be bribed with meager handouts, to take away the leaders and guides. Arrests continue on a massive scale. They arrest for collecting
money in favor of strikers and the wounded. They cordon off apartments where even a dozen people gather
for a private meeting. On Wednesday, the number of those arrested was so great that
they had to put two or three in one cell. (From the arrested liberals, Arsenyev has already been released).]
... [the hatred of the population for Grand Duke Vladimir is evidenced by the story of
the police on Tuesday evening advising to send not the Grand Duke's carriage (to the station in order to take one of the Grand Duke's guests arriving in St. Petersburg to the palace), but a hired cab] . . . *

The article was included in Works VII, 96-98. The whole of it was written by Lenin
except for the last two lines of the first paragraph on p. 97: "Now scientists and writers from Austria, France and Italy have joined them." These
words were written by M. Olminsky.
Part of the manuscript crossed out by Lenin is lost; the last passage
begins in mid-sentence: "dli in honor of the fallen." These words
were also crossed out. Ed.
