An excerpt of a letter to G. Rolland-Holst.

[Esteemed] Comrade.

C. Radek has just shown us the letter from c. Pannekoek and the Introduction.

This letter and Introduction substantially alter the previously agreed constitution of the Review [Vorbote]. It was previously agreed that the Review would appear as the organ of two groups, namely:

1) The group of Rolland-Holst and Trotsky (it is possible that Rolland-Holst and her friends without Trotsky, should Trotsky not wish to participate);

2) The Zimmerwald Left group (whose bureau consists of three comrades: Radek, Lenin and [Zinoviev]). C. Pannekoek was appointed as the representative of this group.

Now, as a consequence of the aforementioned documents (the letter and Introduction), the conditions are changing: the Review becomes the organ of two comrades: Pannekoek and Rolland-Holst.

Should comrades Pannekoek and Rolland-Holst have decided to accept these changes, we take note of this.

The proprietor of the Review had full right to make this change. We do not refuse to continue our joint work under the new conditions, but we must require certain guarantees. The Review appears for the first time as the organ of the Zimmerwald Left or "on the platform of the Zimmerwald Left." By all members present at Zimmerwald of the [Zimmerwald] Left (except Platten), we were elected as representatives of this Left. Therefore we believe—and on this point we have come to a unanimous decision—that this guarantee is self-evident and without doubt will be granted by you. The guarantee consists in this: that should principal disagreements arise between us, the editorial article which [from the C.P.R.S.-D.R. Party (representative*)....
