To Comrade Zalutsky and Comrade Solts

I have received news of Nadezhda Sergeevna Alliluyeva’s expulsion from the Party.

Personally, I had observed her work as a secretary in the Administration Department of the Sovnarkom—thus, she was very close to me. However, I deem it necessary to point out that I have known the entire Alliluyev family—father, mother, and their two daughters—since before the October Revolution. In particular, during the July Days, when both Zinoviev and I were forced to go into hiding and the danger was extremely high, it was this very family that provided me with refuge. All four members of the household, enjoying the full trust of the Bolshevik party members at the time, not only concealed both of us but also rendered a host of clandestine services—services without which we would never have managed to evade Kerensky’s pursuers. It is quite possible that, given Nadezhda Sergeevna Alliluyeva’s youth, this fact remained unknown to the Commission. I am also unaware whether, in examining Nadezhda Sergeevna Alliluyeva’s case, the Commission had the opportunity to compare her father’s background: he had served in various capacities, working tirelessly to support the Party long before the Revolution—and, as I have heard, he rendered significant assistance to underground Bolsheviks under the Tsarist regime.

I consider it my duty to bring these circumstances to the attention of the Central Commission for Purging the Party. 149
