I received your letter from the doctor and was very glad to hear news from home. The package sent by mama I received and think it will be very convenient. I shall certainly make use of your suggestion about obtaining excerpts from the Rumyantsev Library.22 Yesterday I finally got into the famous Yudin library here, which he welcomed me to most cordially and showed me his book collections. He has given me permission to work in it as well, and I think I shall be able to do so. (There are two obstacles here: first, his library is outside the city, but the distance is small, only two versts, so it's a pleasant walk. Second, the library is not yet completely organized, so I might excessively burden the owner by frequently asking him for books.) We shall see how this works out in practice. I think the second obstacle will be removed as well. I have not become acquainted with his library at all thoroughly, but in any case it is a remarkable collection of books. There are, for example, complete sets of journals (the principal ones) from the end of the 18th century to the present time. I hope to be able to make use of them for the references which are so necessary for my work.
