*) Vladimir Ilyich is referring to the article "Revolutionary Self-Government
of Citizens" in No. 12 of the Menshevik organ. "Social-Democrat," dated August 31
(18), 1905 (published in Geneva).
2) Here Vladimir Ilyich records the following in the form of a proportion:
the organization of revolutionary self-government is in the same relation
to the democratic revolution as consumer societies are to the socialist revolution.
3) Sig — why?
4) Here, first of all, the article "Boycott of the Bulygin
Duma and Insurrection" is meant (Coll. Works, vol. VI, pp. 143-149).
5) Unbehilflich — helpless.
6) Zu viel — too much!
7) Unmöglich — impossible.
8) Stimmt — correct. The words about "bits" and the words below: "chicken"
and egg," "back and front," "bits and all," as well as examples with cooperatives,
relate to the question that a little below Vladimir Ilyich Formula
lated in the words: — "Dialectic" of the confused process and the logic of untangling
consciousness," "dialectic of confused life and the logic of untangling
bacilli of soc.-democratic consciousness." In the article itself, Vladimir Ilyich
writes:
"The process of actual development always proceeds confusedly, sticking out
bits of the epilogue earlier than the real prologue. But does this mean that the leader
of a conscious party is allowed to confuse the tasks of the struggle, allowed
to confuse the prologue with the epilogue? Can the dialectic of a confused
spontaneous process justify the confusion in the logic of conscious soc.-
democrats?" (Coll. Works, vol. VIII, pp. 307-309.)
9) Versus — in opposition to.
10) Konsumverein — consumer society.
“ ) Coll. Works, vol. VIII, p. 173.
12) The resolution of the Mariupol Group of the Donetsk Union was in-
cited in F. Dan's article "On the Question of the State Duma" in "Iskra"
No. 109, dated September 11 (August 29), 1905.
In the article "The Last Word of Iskra Tactics" the position of the Mariupol group is not considered,
13) At the end of the article "Revolutionary Self-Government" in No. 12 of "Social-
Democrat" it is said: "Revolutionary self-government is the path on
which we, with every small success, prepare the victory of the future
nationwide uprising."
14) In No. 109 of "Iskra" Lenin uses two articles for polemics with the Mensheviks
mi: 1) "On the Question of the State Duma" (Dan) and 2) "Boycott of the Duma and
revolutionary self-government of the people" (Martov).
15) A number of Lenin's letters to members of the Central Committee are devoted to the issue of uniting the two factions. (See VI Dept. of the "Collection") On the two Central Organs, see pp. 497
and 502.

* TO THE ARTICLE "POLITICAL STRIKE
AND STREET FIGHTING IN MOSCOW."
[October 10-12, 1905]
Article "Bloody days in
Moscow" appears for the first time in print.
It was written by Vladimir Ilyich
October 10 (September 27), two days before he wrote an article on the same
topic, printed in "Proletary" No. 24, dated October 17 (4),
1905, "Political Strike and Street Fighting in Moscow,"
the plan of which is printed below.

BLOODY DAYS IN MOSCOW.
Geneva, October 10 (27 IX) [1905].
A new outbreak of workers' uprising — a mass strike and
street fighting in Moscow. In the capital on January 9, the first
thunder of the revolutionary action of the proletariat crashed. The peals of this
thunder reverberated throughout Russia, raising with unprecedented speed
more than a million proletarians to a gigantic struggle.
After St. Petersburg, the outskirts followed, where national oppression
aggravated the already unbearable political oppression. Riga,
Poland, Odessa, the Caucasus became in turn centers of uprising
which grew in breadth and depth with each month, with each
week.
Now it has reached the center of Russia, the heart of the "truly Russian" regions, which pleased the reactionaries most of all
with their stability. A number of circumstances explain
this comparative stability, i.e., the backwardness of the center
of Russia: n less developed Forms of large industry, *
