Dear Aleksandr Mikhailovna! It will be very unfortunate if your trip to America falls through completely. We had built considerable hopes on this journey—both for publishing our pamphlet in America ("Socialism and War"; you'll receive it shortly), and for connections with the publisher Charles Kerr in Chicago generally, and for rallying the internationalists, and finally, for financial assistance, which we need so extraordinarily for all those pressing matters in Russia of which you write (and you rightly emphasize their urgency in connection with the desirability of our being closer to Russia: the obstacles to this are first and foremost financial, secondly, police obstacles: whether one can travel there safely...).

If the question of the journey has been finally decided in the negative on your end, then try to think whether you cannot (through connections with Charles Kerr, etc.) help us bring out our pamphlet in English? This is only possible in America. We are sending you the German edition of our pamphlet. Do everything possible for its sale in the Scandinavian countries (it is devilishly important for us to recover at least part of the expenses on it, for otherwise we cannot bring it out in French!).
