Dear A. M.!

If you recognize that "our squabbling is caused by irreconcilable differences in ideological roots," — which is also true of the Socialist Revolutionaries — (which is also true of the Kadets — the "Landmarks" collection — you didn't add this, but there's no doubt about it) — that a reformist party (a felicitous word!) is being formed — then one cannot say to a liquidator and his enemy: "you are both quarrelsome."

Then it is the business of those who have understood the ideological roots of "squabbling," without participating in it, — to help the masses search out these roots, rather than justify the masses for treating disputes as "personal general's business."

We "leaders have written neither one clear book, nor one solid pamphlet"...
This is incorrect. We wrote as best we could. No less clearly, no less solidly than before. And we wrote a great deal. There were instances — we wrote against people without any "squabbling" (against the "Landmarks" collection*, against Chernov 103, against Rozhkov** and so on). [Do you see all issues of the "Neva Star"?]

..."The result of this: in Russia now among workers there is a great deal of good... youth, but it is so fiercely disposed against the West"... this is factually correct, but this is not the result of the "leaders'" fault, but of the detachment or rather the rupture between Russia and émigré centers. One must bind together what is torn, but it is cheap, popular, but little useful to rail at the leaders... "which dissuades workers from participation in the conference"...

Which conference? The one being convened now by the liquidators? We too dissuade from it!

Is there not some misunderstanding on your part here? 104

I read that Amphitheatrov came out almost in a Warsaw newspaper 105 for a boycott of the Fourth Duma? Don't you have this article? Send it — I'll return it.

And in the Baltic Fleet it's seething! I had a special delegate in Paris (between us) sent by an assembly of sailors and Social-Democrats.

There is no organization — I simply want to weep!! If you have officer connections, every effort must be made to organize something. The sailors' mood is militant, but everything could be lost again for nothing.

And your articles in "Life's Questions" are unsuccessful. A strange journal, by the way — liquidationist-labor-populist-landmarks-ist. Or rather, precisely a "classless reformist" party...

You ask why I am in Austria. The Central Committee has set up a bureau here (between us): it's close to the border, we use it, closer to Petersburg, we have a courier on the 3rd day to—
