Dear Citizen Charles Duma!

My wife and I recall with great pleasure that time when we became acquainted with you in Paris, on the rue Boni. We are very grateful to you for the exchange of ideas and for very precise information about the socialist movement in France.

I deeply regret that personal relations between us have become impossible, after we were divided by such profound political disagreements. Throughout the entire war I fought against the tendency of "national defense," I have always stood for a split, being convinced that this tendency completely destroys socialism.

It goes without saying that I am writing this letter not as a member of the government, but as a private individual.
