To Fotieva, or
To Lepeshinskaya, or
To Volodicheva¹
I request that you forward these books to Comrade Zinoviev and, in turn, ask him to send me from Petrograd:
1) one copy each of these books;
2) “Utrenniki”²;
3) “Chronicles of the House of Writers”³.
Please ensure the prompt and meticulous delivery of these and similar publications.
I ask Comrade Zinoviev to assign responsibility for this matter to a designated comrade and to coordinate this task with my secretary.
Lenin
1 J. T. Fotieva had been a party member since 1904. From 1918 onward, she served as Secretary of the Sovnarkom, later also of the STO, and beginning in August of that same year, she concurrently held the position of Secretary to V. I. Lenin.
N. S. Lepeshinskaya was a staff member of V. I. Lenin’s Secretariat from 1918 to 1925.
M. A. Volodicheva had been a party member since 1917. From 1918 to 1924, she worked as a typist in the Sovnarkom, serving as Assistant Secretary of the Council of Labor and Defense and of the Sovnarkom.
2 The reference is to the literary and artistic anthology “Utrenniki,” published in Petrograd in 1922. The collection was received and reviewed by V. I. Lenin, who inscribed the cover with the notations: “Copy belonging to Lenin,” “p. 5,” “p. 12,” and added underlining throughout the text on several pages of the volume. On page 5, he underlined passages in the text and drew horizontal lines in the margins of K. Pavlov’s essay “Russia”; on page 12, he underlined certain phrases and appended the note “NB” to Pyotr Sorokin’s article “Setting Out on the Road: A Speech Delivered at the Solemn Assembly Marking the 103rd Anniversary of Saint Petersburg University,” delivered on February 21, 1922.
Marks and underlinings are also found on other pages of these essays.
3 “Chronicles of the House of Writers” was a literary research and critical-bibliographical journal, the official organ of the House of Writers. It was published in Petrograd from 1921 to 1922. In 1922, publication ceased; beginning in May 1922, it was succeeded by the journal “Literary Notes.”
