To Stalin

If you have already sent Klemperer away, I would advise, at the very least: 1) to expel him from Russia no later than Friday or Saturday, together with Förster; 2) to task Ramonov, along with Levin and others, with utilizing these German physicians and establishing oversight mechanisms in their wake.

The tone of the note is quite reassuring, as it testifies to a “vigilant” attitude; however, to agree to these proposals is, of course, out of the question.

Trotsky.

Leave the Germans where they are; and for Ilyich’s sake—just to offer some comfort—inform him that a new round of examinations has been scheduled for all 80 comrades previously examined by the Germans, plus a number of sick comrades beyond that.

G. Zinoviev.

I concur with Zinoviev.

Tomsky.

That is correct.

L. Kamenev.

I agree.

I. Stalin.

Fund 2, Inventory 1, File 25993 — Lenin’s note, an autograph penned by M.I. Ulyanova; the notes of the Politburo members—autographs.

1. Lenin dictated this note to I.V. Stalin through M.I. Ulyanova following Professor G. Klemperer’s visit on June 20, 1922. The day before, on June 19, A.M. Kozhevnikov recorded in his diary: “He spoke at length about the German professors. He is deeply troubled by the fact that so much noise and commotion have been stirred up because of him. He earnestly requested that we exert influence to ensure that they return home as soon as possible (the German professors). Especially since he has been informed that there are countless rumors circulating in Moscow about his health—and the presence of the Germans only serves to exacerbate these rumors. He is now firmly on the road to recovery, and there is absolutely no need for these expenditures.”

G. Klemperer paid his final visit to Lenin on Saturday, June 24. O. Förster examined Lenin on June 27, together with V.V. Kramer.
