LETTER TO I.V. STALIN

May 19, 1922

Comrade Stalin!

I enclose a letter1 from Osinsky. In my opinion, it would be advisable to check secretly with Yakovenko and Teodorovich to see if there is anything in this that resembles a new conflict or an exacerbation of an old one in the P[eople's] Commissariat of Agriculture.

If not, I fully support Osinsky's proposal and, moreover, to the maximum extent. I request that it be put to a vote in the Politburo, provided the Secretariat has no objections.

Incidentally, isn't it time to establish 1-2 model sanatoriums no closer than 600 versts from Moscow? Spend gold on this; we are already spending and will continue to spend for a long time on necessary trips to Germany. But recognize as model only those where it is proven possible to have punctiliously strict doctors and administration, rather than the usual Soviet slackers and idlers.

29/V.

Lenin.

P.S. Confidential: In Zubalovo, where they have arranged for you, Kamenev, and Dzerzhinsky, and will arrange for me by autumn, — it is necessary to ensure the repair of the railway and the complete regularity of the movement of motor trolleys, so that quick, confidential, and inexpensive communication can be maintained year-round. Press and verify. Also, get the nearby sovkhoz up and running.

1* In the footnote to the word, V.I. Lenin wrote: "Return this letter to me for its second part: I will give an order."

1 V.I. Lenin sent I.V. Stalin a letter from N. Osinsky dated May 18, 1922, requesting a long leave for work on a book about the agrarian question. On the letter, Lenin wrote: "(I am for all of it)" (RCHIDNI, f. 2, op. 1, file 24798).
