Com. Krestinsky!

I thank you very much for the medicine1.

I'd like to talk to you about Bukharchik. Smilga told me that he's behaving badly. He's not getting any treatment. Nervous. Rumors of an assassination attempt (being prepared) on him make him mad and so on.

An assassination attempt is quite possible, and the enemy has many chances of success. I therefore propose the following:

Bukharin is summoned here. In a month (or 1 1/2) we will send him back to his wife.

In the meantime, prepare

1) transfer his wife to another sanatorium, where there are fewer whites, where there are more German Communist workers in the neighborhood. Probably we can find such a place in Saxony.

2) In the meantime, prepare 2-3 German Communist workers, not talkers, and put them in without Bukharin's knowledge, near his sanatorium, for protection. It is difficult to do this andbovseivsya - chatterers, wastrels, braggarts. But it must be done.

3) Bukharin's wife should be called by her maiden name. It is her right under our laws.

I ask you very much to do all this thoroughly, seriously2.

Hi!

Your Lenin.

The inscription on the envelope т. Krestinsky (from Lenin 26/IV) (return the inscription on the envelope).

Fond 2, op. 1, d. 24789, l. 1-2 - autograph.

April 118, 1922 N.N.Krestinsky wrote to V.I.Lenin from Berlin: "With the same courier who will give you this letter, I send you, according to your request, 3 boxes of Veronal, Adolin and Somnacetin each" (RCCHIDNI, f. 5, on. 1, d. 1089, fol. 4).

2In the same letter N.N.Krestinsky reported: "As for Bukharin, the case with him is as follows: I found him in Berlin, where he was sitting for two and a half weeks. At the same time, since we had fairly reliable information about an assassination attempt on him and Radek, he was not allowed out of the mission building. He was nervous, living rather badly, and what little he had gained in St. Blasin was being lost rather quickly.... It is impossible to vouch, however. The name under which he lives here has become quite well known. We cannot organize a guard in any resort outside Berlin. So we can't rule out the possibility of some ridiculous assassination attempt. That is why we are letting him go to Russia, and he, on his part, gives his word that he will go to finish his treatment and rest in Russia together with you.... at the end of the week he will leave for Russia by sea via Petrograd" (ibid.).
