LETTER TO N.N. KRESTINSKY AND INSTRUCTION TO THE SECRETARY

28 January 1922

Comrade Krestinsky!

Thank you for the letter about Rykov. Take all measures to protect the Bukharins. Bukharin's wife should be sent to a sanatorium for a long time. They say she is seriously ill.¹

N.I. Bukharin must be strictly kept out of politics. Let him stay [where he is] now, until his heart improves, and then let him visit his wife from time to time. Ensure: no involvement in politics!

Greetings!

Lenin.

28/I.

Instruction to the Secretary

Please send this through P.P. Gorbonov to Berlin, with utmost secrecy, sealed and so forth.

Fund 2, op. 1, f. 24747 - autograph.

¹ The full representative of the RSFSR in Germany, N.N. Krestinsky, reported on the health of N.I. Bukharin and his wife, N.M. Bukharina: "Nikolai Ivanovich is severely emaciated; due to this emaciation, he has developed severe neurasthenia, and his heart is not in perfect condition, but there are no organic damages yet... My impression of Nikolai Ivanovich is that for a complete recovery of his strength and work capacity, he needs to stay in a sanatorium or, perhaps, first in a sanatorium and then somewhere in the mountains, for a total of at least two months...

The situation with Nadezhda Mikhailovna is more serious. The process in her lungs has already passed, but due to an endocrine disorder and severe emaciation, her nerves are in a very poor state, and there are signs of sugar" (RTsKhIDNI, f. 5, op. 1, d. 1089, l. 3).
