To Kamenev

Copies to: Bukharin, P. P. Gorbunov

Comrade Kamenev!

I only just learned of Goldenberg’s death. They say it was due to cardiac paralysis. I am deeply afraid—and nearly certain—that our own carelessness is to blame, for he was an exceedingly frail man, and we utterly failed to provide him with the care he so desperately needed. I earnestly request that you arrange the following: 1) that the funeral be conducted properly—whether through the Moscow Council or via the People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs; 2) that we then attend to his widow, who is likely completely destitute and, as far as I know, utterly helpless and ill-equipped to cope with contemporary Russian life; 3) that the press also publish an obituary in his memory.

It is clear that emigration—and our own reckless negligence—have consigned him to the grave. We are losing valuable comrades and workers in a manner that is utterly unforgivable. 183
