VARIOUS BRANCHES OF INDUSTRY

Now it has come to light that the question of producing alcohol from
peat has not yet been definitively resolved. The method has not been tested
on an industrial scale and is not economically clear (there is no precisely verified
calculation and no data to compile it accurately). Therefore,
we cannot yet talk about the mass production of alcohol from peat.
Take all measures to expedite the launch of the pilot plant for the production of alcohol from peat - the former
Givartovsky yeast factory in Moscow.
As for Smirnov's proposal to pay the peasants for potatoes with alcohol, I object categorically.
If Smirnov insists, let him submit the question to the Central Committee.
Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars V. Ulyanov (Lenin).

P. S. We need to bring the inventor here; show [Lobachev]
to Lazarev3, take him to Nizhny, etc.
1 This refers to the discovery by the Kharkov electrical engineer
Cheiko of magnetic rays, the thermal effect of which supposedly allowed
mines, artillery depots, etc. to be detonated at a distance, without wires.
However, the invention did not prove itself upon verification. (For details, see
"Pravda" No. 267, November 26, 1921, the article "A Remarkable
Discovery".)
8 P. P. Lazarev - academician, famous physicist and biophysicist; head
of work on the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly.

To N. P. Gorbunov.

When the inventor you have requested from Kharkov arrives
(his last name seems to be Cheiko), it is necessary to demand from him an exact
formal written review on all points indicated in the newspaper "Pravda," and this review must be 1) from Lazarev
or another major scientist in Moscow or St. Petersburg, 2) from
Bonch-Bruevich1 and other specialists of the Nizhny Novgorod
Radio Laboratory.
Lenin.
1 M. A. Bonch-Bruevich - engineer, outstanding radio specialist, and
since 1918 to the present time has headed the V. I. Lenin Nizhny
Novgorod Radio Laboratory founded by him in 1918.
