Tov. Rykov!

Alexei Ivanovich gives me, his wife, and others the impression of a completely sick man. He goes to conferences by force. His letter to me today shows that the doctors insist on serious treatment.

Even a non-doctor can see that.

He is exhausted to hell, almost overworked.

He's not getting any treatment. It's an outrage. Embezzlement of government property is completely unacceptable.

Can't you persuade him, or trick him, or go with him yourself?

Where in Essentuki do we have good treatment? Obvious nonsense! There will be chaos, confusion, disorder, fatigue, not treatment, jangling of nerves, appeals of local workers.

He's stubborn, he doesn't want to go to Germany. And there 2-3 months is worth 4-5 with us. There will be isolation, rest, feed, treatment according to science strictly. He'll become an able-bodied man. We need them badly.

Please try to "take him out" to Germany and treat him seriously.

Hi!

1N.S.Rykova replied to V.I.Lenin on June 1, 1921: "My husband is terribly opposed to traveling abroad. Apart from his long-standing dislike of foreign countries, he dislikes meeting any of the 2 million Russians who have fled, dislikes living in a country whose language he does not know, dislikes being torn away from Russia.... My husband gave his word that he would agree to go abroad if the information about the situation in the Caucasus did not satisfy the doctors, but in this case he would go only illegally" (Izvestia of the Central Committee of the CPSU, 1989, No. 4, p. 162). On July 7, 1921 the resolution of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the RCP(b) obliged A.I.Rykov "to go abroad for diagnosis and treatment" (ibid., p. 167). For a selection of documents on Rykov's treatment in Germany, see: ibid. p. 162-167. 162-167.
