LETTER TO ALL PEOPLE'S COMMISSARS (ESPECIALLY NKZem, NKProd, and NKTrud)
May 26, 1920
I request all possible assistance in the speedy formation of
the train "North Caucasus" and its supply with effective
political workers and instructors.
Chairman of the SNK
Ulyanov (Lenin)
Printed from a typewritten copy.
* The telegram from
Novorossiysk to
V. I. Lenin and
I. V. Stalin contained a message from Batumi about the atrocities of the interventionists and White Guards, about the arrests and persecution of activists in trade union workers' organizations in Batumi. "The reason for such a rout
of the Batumi workers' movement," the telegram stated, "apparently, was the struggle that
workers' organizations began against the evacuation of Batumi by speculators,
who, upon learning of the proclamation of
Soviet power in Baku, began to export their goods in an emergency order. The Soviet of Unions forbade loading onto ships without special
permission from a special commission." This caused a conflict with the authorities
of the interventionists, who began to conduct mass arrests of activists in the workers'
movement. Arrested workers were threatened with execution. Batumi
comrades asked Novorossiysk organizations "to bring everything to the attention of the Council of People's Commissars so that it could take measures dependent on it."
