TELEGRAM FROM V. I. LENIN and I. V. STALIN
TO L. B. KRASIN and M. M. LITVINOV
COPENHAGEN
May 8, 1920
To your numbers, 34, 35, 49, 43 and 48, we inform: 1) The agreements with the consortium of Swedish metalworking and locomotive-building factories are satisfactory, sign them. Clarify whether the agreed method of payment, with the provision of credit to us, applies to all Swedish metal products we purchase, or exclusively to orders that we will place in the future. 2) Gold to Reval for thirty-two million kronor will be sent at your request. 3) We doubt that Scandinavian industry can significantly contribute to the restoration of our transport. The supply of a thousand locomotives over a six-year period confirms this. We attach importance to the concluded agreement mainly for the purpose of influencing the major locomotive-building factories of Europe and America. 4) Further expenditure of gold must be extremely limited. We consider the political situation of the moment insufficiently favorable for placing a significant portion of our fund abroad. The nomenclature of goods and their quantity, for which you may be granted the right to pay in gold, we will inform you additionally. 5) What is the status of the regulation of orders issued by Vorovsky, and what is the fate of the Russian gold placed in Sweden by the Provisional Government?
