Comrade Dzerzhinsky!

I kindly request that you arrange for a more rigorous investigation. Would it be possible to assign impartial investigators—people who are not from Petrograd—to conduct the inquiry?

I have also heard from another source (in addition to the information contained in these letters and in Kalmykova’s account) that the local Cheka has committed egregious abuses in this case.

We must carry out a thorough and swift investigation.

Once the matter is concluded, I would be grateful if you could return the attached documents to me and instruct your secretary to send me a telegram summarizing the outcome of Case 196.

Best regards! —Your Lenin
