¹ This document relates to the period
when
in Transcaucasia
a stubborn struggle was being waged against the forces of internal counterrevolution and foreign
interventionists.
For the struggle against Denikin's troops in the North
Caucasus, the South-Eastern Front was transformed into the Caucasus Front.
V. I. Lenin, extremely concerned about the state of the troops on the Caucasus
Front, wrote: "... it is necessary to strain all forces and carry out a series of emer
gency measures with
revolutionary energy"
(Pol. sobr. soch.,
vol.
51,
p. 134).
For a more detailed familiarization with the plan for the redeployment of
troops,
Lenin demanded on February 23, 1920, a report from the Revolutionary Military Council of the Western
Front in connection with the possibility of active operations by
Polish troops.
The report stated: "...the reinforcement of the Caucasus Front could be
carried out by means of regrouping the troops of the South-Western Front with a shift
to the left, which would reinforce the Caucasus Front by several divisions
sooner than the extremely lengthy transport from the north by rail ..." (to the underlined passage Lenin added a note:
"It seems
this is precisely the mistake? It seems there is nothing more to take from the South-Western
Front?" (see
"From the History
of the Civil War in the USSR",
1961,
vol. 3, p. 257).
The struggle in the North Caucasus finally concluded at
the end
of March 1921.
