NOTATION ON LETTER OF THE PEOPLE'S COMMISSARIAT OF RAILWAYS
December 29, 1919

To the Secretariat of the Council of People's Commissars

Regarding the note in the Swedish newspaper about the application of the diesel motor for locomotive traction, I report: the application of diesel engines for locomotive traction encounters great difficulties in the properties of the diesel motor, in particular in this engine's inability to withstand overload and difficulty in changing direction.

The application of diesel engines for locomotives is one of the most difficult tasks of technology, and even the Swedes, the best designers in the entire world, as far as is known, have not yet solved this task. This problem has absolutely no practical significance for us, since we have not the slightest possibility of converting locomotives to diesel, even if the task had already been technically solved, which it has not.
